Migrating from Ektron to EPiServer: Minimum Server Requirements
Dan Sales#Episerver-Ektron Merger, #Episerver, #Ektron, #Hosting

We look at the minimum hosting requirements for Ektron and EPiServer and how they will affect site owners who are migrating from the former to the latter.
Since the announcement of the merger between EPiServer and Ektron, website owners who utilize the Ektron platform have been considering whether to migrate to EPiServer. But for those who have decided to take the plunge, one question that often comes up is how much of an impact this move will have on their website’s hosting. Fortunately, for most users of the current version of Ektron, the answer is “not much.” Ektron version 9 and EPiServer CMS 8 have very similar minimum server requirements, and many users should be able to install EPiServer on their current Ektron servers without any issues.
To illustrate this, let’s take a look at the current minimum application server and database server requirements for both Ektron and EPiServer (as of September 2015):
Ektron Version 9.1 Minimum Server Requirements
Application Server
Hardware
- 4-bit processing, 2 or more core processors, and at least 4 GB of memory.
Operating System
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Database Server
Hardware
- 64-bit processing, 2 or more core processors, and at least 8 GB of memory.
Operating System
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Relational Database Management System
- Microsoft SQL Server 2012
- Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
EPiServer Version 8 Minimum Server Requirements
Application Server
Hardware
- None Specified
Operating System
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 64 bit
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008
Database Server
Hardware
- None Specified
Operating System
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
- Microsoft Windows Server 2012
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 64 bit
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008
Relational Database Management System
- Microsoft SQL Server 2014
- Microsoft SQL Server 2012
- Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
- Microsoft SQL Server 2008
If we compare the server hardware requirements of the two systems, we see that Ektron specifies a minimum level of CPU and memory, while EPiServer does not. The supported operating systems for Ektron are both supported by EPiServer at this time as well.
When we look at the supported relational database management systems, we see that the same thing holds true. All of the supported database management systems for Ektron are also supported by EPiServer.
Based on a reading of the minimum server requirements of Ektron version 9.1 and EPiServer version 8, we see that if you are running Etkron 9.1 and migrating from Ektron to EPiServer, the move should be a snap where your hosting is concerned.
New EPiServer Installations
While your Ektron hosting environment will be able to support the move to EPiServer, what about new EPiServer installations? Currently, we are recommending that new EPiServer deployments meet the following minimum requirements:
- Application and Database Server Operating System: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
- Relational Database Management System: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or 2014
Each deployment is unique. When considering the hosting requirements of your production environment, we recommend you contact a member of the Diagram team to review the needs of your planned implementation. If you have any other questions, please feel free to leave a comment below.
